Decluttering

Diane and Linda-Marie lead very different lives on opposite sides of the country. However, they share a similar aesthetic of beauty and comfort. There are things in their homes—a British phone booth in Diane’s, a steampunk lamp made from books in Linda-Marie’s, that combine whimsy with purpose. These delightful details are balanced by unfussy furniture that’s comfy and can handle the absence of a coaster. Still, when the subject of Marie Kondo’s decluttering movement came up in conversation, the sisters saw themselves on opposite sides. Linda-Marie is a fan, Diane is not-quite-embracing, perhaps even a doubter. They do agree on letting go of the past, be it objects or memories, when it holds them back from moving forward, and simplifying physical and mental environments whenever possible. They also love a clean house! They took on the subject of decluttering in their essays this month, and went in different directions. Enjoy reading, and join the sisters in the parlor to listen to what they thought about each other’s take on decluttering.
